Welcoming Baby #2 and Unexpected News

There is so much to catch up on. I have been a little MIA lately, because we have been keeping a much anticipated secret. We are expecting our second baby in October! I still can't believe we are going to have two kids. We are so excited to see Autumn become a big sister. I know she will be so sweet to our baby. It will be a fun learning experience for all of us.

Recently we encountered an unexpected turn of events during this pregnancy. Last Tuesday, I noticed some pain in my upper right leg. It felt like a common leg cramp you get with pregnancy. I went in the same day for my sonogram appointment. I almost thought the cramp had something to do with the baby. As we did the ultrasound, the baby looked great with no problems with the uterus or ovaries. It was a relief to know we have a healthy child.

As the day went on, I took some Tylenol for the pain and took a nap. Hours later, the pain seemed to have gotten worse. It got to a point where I couldn't even walk to the bathroom. Collin had to assist me so I could take a shower. As I was showering, I noticed my right leg looked different from my left. It was more swollen and was purplish pink. I had Collin take a look at it and he also noticed the difference. After doing research, he said it could be serious and that I might need to be seen by a doctor right away. I called an advice nurse and told her the all the symptoms I had. She said to go to the emergency room immediately.

We drove late at night to the nearest ER. I had to be in a wheelchair, because I could barely walk. Once I was settled into a room, the doctors took a close look at my leg. They noticed the color on my leg didn't look normal. I had an ultrasound on my leg to find out if there was more than just a leg cramp. After waiting for an hour to find my results, the doctors told my I had a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which is a blood clot due to pregnancy. They were very surprised that I had it in the first trimester. They said most women get it in the third trimester. I was out of loss of words. I was in complete shock and immediately got worried about how the rest of my pregnancy was going to go. How was I going to do? Is my baby going to be okay? Those were the questions that entered my mind.

The doctors told me that I needed to be on medication for blood thinners. I thought it would be just an antibiotic that you take by mouth, no big deal right? They told me that I would actually be using injections. I couldn't believe what I had just heard. I was almost hoping they were joking. I have to basically administer shots to my belly for the blood thinners to go through. I already don't like needles and the thought of giving myself shots twice a day kind of freaked me out. I have been on them for almost a week now and I think I've gotten used to it.

Collin has been working from home because of COVID-19 so it's been nice having him home. Since we are all quarantined, he has been taking good care of Autumn and I. Not to mentioned our dog, cooking, and all the things around our apartment. He has basically been the dad and mom throughout the last few weeks because I haven't been super mobile. He is doing so amazing and is going above and beyond to make sure my needs are met.

Between the nonstop nausea and blood clot in my leg, I'd say this pregnancy has been a lot harder than it was with Autumn. The news about me having DVT was the last thing I needed to be dealing with. I have cried my eyes out wondering how it could've happened and how I could've prevented it. Obviously it wasn't something we thought would happen during my pregnancy. The good news is the baby is looking great and developing normally. We are getting by everyday to make sure my leg gets better. The doctors will probably monitor me more carefully this pregnancy to make sure the baby and I get the proper care that we need. It's a pain to use the blood thinners, but they seem to be helping with the swelling. We are hopeful that things will look up with our sweet baby and know that all this is worth it.

Our pregnancy announcement. Autumn making her debut as a big sister!

Because it took us 2 years to get pregnant with Autumn, we decided to use ovulation tests. It worked, because this time around, it only took us 3 months!

On January 27th, we found out we were pregnant!

I took another test a week later to be certain

My ultrasound at 8 weeks

Very excited to meet this little peanut!

The belly making it's appearance early this pregnancy.

My sweet pea at 12 weeks

Just hours after my doctor's appointment, I was in the ER. Despite how scary it was, I was glad we caught my blood clot issue early on. Now it's just a matter of treatment and moving forward.

13 weeks entering the 2nd trimester!

  1. Congratulations Kaitlin, Collin and Autumn on this exciting news! Autumn will be the best big sister. I am so happy for you but also sorry that you had to go through something so scary as the DVT. I'm so glad you caught it early and are able to receive treatment and that Baby is doing well.
